Two counties, two license systems

Suffolk County Consumer Affairs licenses master electricians countywide and has a public search. Nassau County does not license electricians; its towns, cities and villages do, so ask which one issued the license and check with that office.

Questions about hiring an electrician here

How do I know an electrician is licensed on Long Island?

In Suffolk, search the name or license number on Suffolk County Consumer Affairs' Search Licensed Contractors page, or call (631) 853-4600. In Nassau, Consumer Affairs says towns, cities and villages license electricians, so ask which one issued the license and confirm it with that office.

Where do the ratings on this page come from?

Each company's Google rating and review count as shown on its Google Maps listing in October 2026. We do not collect or publish our own reviews.

Does planned electrical work need a permit?

Most of it. Haines Electric in Lido Beach says panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators, new circuits and pool wiring usually need a permit, while swapping an existing switch or outlet one for one usually does not.

Does the town inspect the work?

Usually a private agency does. The Town of Huntington says it does not conduct electrical inspections, and the permit holder hires an authorized inspection agency for the certificate.

Does it cost anything to request quotes?

No. The form is free for homeowners, and you are under no obligation to hire anyone who calls.
