The county handles electrician licensing for every Suffolk town and village. Master and Restricted Electrician licenses are issued by Suffolk County Consumer Affairs, renewals depend on continuing education hours, and a 2014 state law made that county license override town and village versions. In practice a master electrician from Riverhead can work in Huntington on the same license. Use the county’s online license search or phone the department on (631) 853-4600 to confirm one.

Permits are still issued locally, and the inspection is done by a private agency on your town’s list. Brookhaven and Islip accept the same nine agencies, based anywhere from East Quogue to Kings Park, and the inspection agency guide has their numbers. The license guide covers what to look for on the county record.

Hiring an electrician in Suffolk

How do I check a Suffolk electrician's license?

The county's online search takes a license number, a person's name, a business name or a phone number. Pick Master Electrical License or Restricted Electrical License to narrow it, or phone the department on (631) 853-4600.

Does my town inspect the work?

Usually a private agency does. The Town of Huntington says it does not conduct electrical inspections, and Brookhaven and Islip each publish a list of nine agencies they accept.

Does an electrician need a separate license for my town?

No. Chapter 257 of the Laws of 2014 lets the Suffolk license stand in for any town or village electrician license. You still need a permit from the local building department for the job itself.
