EV Charger Installation on Long Island

The new car came home on Saturday with a charging cord that plugs into the same garage outlet as the chest freezer, and by Monday it had added barely enough range for the round trip to the train. A Level 2 charger on its own 240 volt circuit is the usual answer, and the length of wire from the panel to the parking spot is one of the biggest pieces of the price.

A Level 2 charger gets its own 240 volt circuit, run from a breaker in the panel to the wall where the car parks. The size of that breaker sets how fast the car can charge.

A home Level 2 charger on Long Island usually costs $850 to $2,800 to install, depending on how far the circuit has to run and whether the panel has room. Add the charger if it is not in the quote. PSEG Long Island takes $100 off a qualifying charger, or $400 for some households.

What a Level 2 charger asks of the house

PSEG Long Island says home Level 2 chargers range from 30 to 80 amps, and that a licensed electrician should decide whether your panel needs an upgrade to run one. Each charger gets a dedicated 240 volt circuit. Haines Electric explains that the charger’s own requirements set the circuit size, the wire size and the breaker. Marra Electric says most Level 2 units run on 40 to 60 amp circuits and suggests a 60 amp circuit so a faster charger can go on later without rewiring.

What makes one install cost twice another

Distance is the big one. Haines Electric calls the run from the panel to the charger one of the biggest factors in price. A garage with the panel on the other side of the wall is the cheap case. A charger at the end of the driveway, a detached garage, a run through finished walls, trenching or a subpanel all add to it.

The second is the panel. Haines warns that an empty breaker space does not by itself mean there is enough capacity left for a charger. If your panel is old or close to full, ask for a load calculation before anyone promises a price.

PSEG Long Island’s charger rebate and charging rate

PSEG Long Island takes $100 off a qualified Level 2 charger. Customers in a Disadvantaged Community or on the Household Assistance Program get another $300, for $400 in all. The terms on PSEG’s rebate page:

  • the charger has to be on the EPRI Vetted Products List, filtered for PSEG Long Island
  • PSEG publishes a list of participating installers, and does not endorse any of them
  • a charger that came with the car does not count unless you can show you bought it separately
  • buy through PSEG’s online marketplace for an instant rebate, or apply online or by email to PSEGLongIslandEVli@psegliny.com with the receipt and photos of the installed charger showing the model and serial numbers

The summary line at the top of PSEG’s page says rebates start at $200, while the program terms give $100. Confirm the amount with PSEG before you count on it. No deadline is listed.

PSEG also offers Rate 195, a Time of Day plan it says gives a 40% discount against the regular flat rate for charging off peak. Ask about it when you apply.

The federal tax credit is gone for new installs. Haines Electric notes that the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026.

Permits and telling PSEG

A Level 2 install adds a new 240 volt circuit, and Haines Electric says that usually means a permit and an inspection, with the rules varying by town, village and property. On Long Island the inspection is normally done by a private agency, not the town; see the inspection agency guide. PSEG Long Island’s Electrification Guideline asks customers to contact it before installing an EV charging station.

Driving a Tesla

Tesla owners have a separate page on the Wall Connector, with Tesla’s breaker and wire requirements.

Ask these before anyone drills

  • Will you do a load check on my panel, and put the result in writing?
  • Are you on PSEG Long Island’s participating installer list, and is the charger I want on the EPRI list?
  • What breaker size and wire will you use, and could I go to a faster charger later on the same wire?
  • Is the permit and inspection in the price?
  • Where exactly will the charger mount, and what does it cost to reach a driveway spot instead of the garage?

Signs a quote is not complete

A price given over the phone without anyone looking at the panel. No mention of the permit. A pitch that still counts the federal tax credit on a charger installed after June 30, 2026.

Home charger questions

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home on Long Island?

Haines Electric in Lido Beach gives about $850 to $2,000 or more for the electrical work on a straightforward Level 2 install (August 2026), with the charger itself extra. Long Island Electric Co. in Hempstead lists $950 to $2,800 installed on its 2026 price page.

Will I need a panel upgrade for a charger?

Not always. Haines Electric says an empty breaker space does not by itself mean the panel can carry a charger, so ask for a load check. If the panel does need replacing, Long Island Electric Co. adds $2,800 to $5,200 to the job.

How do I get the PSEG Long Island charger rebate?

Buy a Level 2 charger on the EPRI Vetted Products List for PSEG Long Island and have it put in by a participating contractor. You can buy through PSEG's online marketplace for an instant rebate, or apply online or by email with the receipt and photos of the installed charger showing the model and serial numbers. The rebate is $100, or $400 in a Disadvantaged Community or on the Household Assistance Program.

Is there still a federal tax credit for a home charger?

Haines Electric says the federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026.

Can I plug in instead of hardwiring?

Yes, with a NEMA 14-50 outlet. StandTech Electric in Port Washington says that setup maxes out at 32 amps, around 30 miles of range per hour.
